With the Fiio (or some other device that can decode DTS) you can send a 5.1 DTS bitstream output and the SB will have processed everything in 5.1 to begin with. The Sound Blaster fully supports DTS: Interactive, which means it can convert (in real time) its output to a DTS bitstream, and also has Neo C for stereo->surround conversion. It is a very competent setup, and should do perfectly for this application. However - as I said previously, I would not jump the gun and start buying stuff - try the Q701 with the Z's built in headphone amplifier. I would personally probably go with the Fiio since it supports DTS as well, and the Sound Blaster drivers offer DTS Neo C which have some more customization options than the Dolby Digital Live encoder. The final output to the headphone amplifier would always be a stereo downmix. If you purchased one of those DACs (they're both under $100 US) and then connected a headphone amp, you could have the soundcard send out a 5.1 bitstream *or* a stereo PCM stream, and basically use any/all features of the card as desired. The exceptions to this are the new Fiio DAC that can take AC-3/DTS input and provide downmixed stereo, and the Gefen DAC that can take AC-3 and provide downmixed stereo (and iirc that one also supports Dolby VS). Modi 2 Uber (and many other "hi-fi" DACs) will only accept PCM stereo as an input - if you're hoping to send 5.1 DTS or AC-3 out (the Sound Blaster can do this) you need something that can handle that, and provide 5.1-7.1 output.
